Fitting Instructions

Many of our birdcage veils and fascinators sit better on one side of the head than the other due to the shape and design. You will often be able to see from the photo of the birdcage veil or fascinator on the website which side it is designed to sit on.  If you see a birdcage that you like but want it to sit on the other side please contact us and we will let you know if we can custom make another birdcage veil as similar as possible to the product you like, but designed for sitting on the other side of the head.

Fitting Instructions:

Birdcage veils are fitted in 3 easy steps.  If the birdcage veil is secured with a comb or crocodile clip,  fitting the birdcage veil is easiest when the hair is up or pulled back, in order to give the comb or clip something to grip to. This is why the models on our website have their hair pulled back.  Some of our birdcage veils and fascinators come with an alice band rather than a comb or clip, in which case it doesn’t matter whether hair is worn up or down (and please note that alice bands are definitely best for short hair).  If you see a birdcage veil or fascinator that you like but with a different fixture (e.g. it is on the site stating that it is on a comb but you would prefer it on an alice band), simply contact us as in most cases we will be able to make a new bespoke piece for you with the fixture that you would like. 🙂

For “one piece” birdcage veils and fascinators with a comb or clip fixture:

(i) First of all hold the comb in one hand and the bottom front edge of the netted veil in the other hand and place the veil on the head. Move it until you find a position that suits you – some people  like the veil to sit further down the face, covering more of the face. Others prefer it sitting higher, covering less of the face. Some people like the birdcage veil at a sharp angle, others prefer it to sit at less of an angle.

(ii) Once you have found the position that you like best, push the comb forward into the hair at that point.

(iii) You may find then that the netted part of the veil does not sit down over the face in exactly the position you would like it to.  In this case, hold the veil in place over the face in the position you want it to sit in. Take some kirby grips and place one at each side the head to hold the veil in place.  This may take anything from 1 to 4 kirby grips, depending on how you want the veil to sit. If you put the grips through just one piece of thread making up the netting then into the hair, this can be done in such a way that you do not see the kirby grips at all.

For birdcage veils without a comb or clip:

Some of our birdcage veils are made with the embellishment separate from the actual birdcage veil – this is becoming increasingly popular as people find it easier to position the embellishment and birdcage veil exactly where they want.    In this case, the embellishment itself will have a comb or clip to secure it.  To position such birdcage veils:

(i) First of all hold the gathered edge of the birdcage veil in one hand and the bottom front edge of the veil in the other hand and place the veil on the head with the gathered point just above and behind one ear and the bottom edge of the veil roughly over your nose.  Move it until you find a position that suits you – some people  like the veil to sit further down the face, covering more of the face. Others prefer it sitting higher, covering less of the face. Some people like the birdcage veil at a sharp angle, others prefer it to sit at less of an angle.

(ii) Once you have found the position you  are happy with, secure the gathered point to the head with one of the kirby grips provided, then insert the embellishment into the hair (using the comb or clip attached to the embellishment) to cover the gathered point.

Then just admire yourself in the mirror!
